Planning Conception and OB update

Last Thursday, I had my final appointment with the pregnancy and diabetes clinic. As part of the spiel, they went over my risk for type II diabetes in later life and gestational diabetes in subsequent pregnancy. The nurse gave me a rather long lecture aout how important it is to have my blood sugars in line at conception and through 10 weeks because of the risk of neural tube defects. She advised that "the minute" I go off birth control, I have the OB test my fasting levels. Umm, yeah, like I am going on birth control and like I have any idea at the possibility, not to even mention, the actual timing of a subsequent conception. I was trying not to snicker because she was so earnest.

Last Friday's OB appointment included my first cervical check which hurt more than I believed possible. No dilation going on, but I did have a contraction (which I didn't feel) on the NST.

It's getting so close! Are you ready? I bet it was nice walking out of that diabetes clinic for the last time!

I hear you on the birth control. My OB took great delight in telling me I'd probably get pregnant without it. Ha!

My first cervical check hurt a LOT too. I was ready for the next ones though and they weren't as bad.

I cannot wait to have that birth control talk with my OB. I'm thinking I'll just take a prescription for something and never fill it. It'll be better than arguing with them.

Thanks for commenting on my blog. It must have felt good walking out of the diabetes clinic.

About me, I did not have a fasting glucose test. I had to drink a soda kind of thing and one hour after that they checked my blood sugar level. WHen did you find out about your diabetes?

That is funny -- the conceiving part. Though it did happen this time, yes?

Just out of curiosity, did they say what your fasting glucose should be below when ttc (as one former GD and IF mom to another, curious to know)?
