The First OB visit

Because Rachel asked, I just wanted to give a little more detailed run-down of my visit. It started off with a fairly clueless nurse who did not know what to do with the papers from the RE. Then, she told me to take my clothes off and that the doctor would do a pap and pelvic. When I told her that I didn't want a pap today, she basically just said that the doctor would have to decide. Um, no. I am the patient, I will decide.

Anyhow, the doctor came in and he went through my history and then spent quite a while just answering our questions (mostly about the risks and benefits of the gall bladder removal while pregnant). He discussed the different testing options- NT scan, quad screen, cvs, amnio. Then, I explained to him that I didn't want a pap because I usually spot after a pap and I didn't need the anxiety today, especially since my last three have been normal. He agreed that I was fine to go without and also informed me that usually they like to do then merely because it's the only time they get women in, so it's an attempt to take advantage of the opportunity. He did a pelvic to check that my cervix was appropriately closed. I really appreciated all of the time he took and like him a lot. He didn't talk down to us, realizing that we aren't exactly the typical couple who just ends up pregnant. Unfortunately, he is just filling in for my regular OB, who is on maternity leave. But I already know that I like her.

Afterward, I was sent to the lab for blood testing- HIV, typing, vaccine titers, etc.- and radiology to schedule the NT scan. All in all, a pretty routine vist.

I'm glad that your visit was routine. I had to refuse the pap about five times when I went in for my first one too. (I had just had one in January, it was March, and I didn't want the anxiety. Plus I figured my insurance might deny it.)

That is pretty cool that he was nice about everything and that he did not talk down to you. Most excellent!

Sounds like a good visit, all told. I'm having my pap post-partum, and that's how they commonly do it here,
